The Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday it will require manufacturers to submit more data on price hikes on prescription medications that are associated with prescription drug prices.
FDA notified patients through its website that prices for certain over-the-counter medicines increased by more than 3% in the last 12 months, the first in three years.
“The price increases are associated with an increasing number of prescription drug claims for over-the-counter medications in the US,” said FDA Office of Generic Drugs Commissioner William H. Baker Jr.
In response, H. R. G. Hoechst Biosciences, Inc. said it was working with the FDA to develop a “prudent” approach to the agency’s decision.
“We continue to monitor price trends in over-the-counter and prescription drugs,” Hoechst said in a statement.
The price of a prescription drug increases the likelihood that a patient will pay more for a prescription drug than they otherwise would if the drug were not covered by insurance.
The price increases are associated with an increasing number of prescription drug claims for over-the-counter medications, the FDA said.
“This is the first time the drug market has been associated with an increase in over-the-counter prescription drug prices. It’s not new,” said the FDA’s director of drug research, Dr. Scott Gottlieb.
“The FDA has done a great job of putting price data on the market and helping patients to make healthy decisions about their health. We’ve been working with manufacturers to determine what they believe are the best ways to reduce the overall cost of their medications.”
